For 15 years David hung on to God’s word alone that he would one day be king, whilst Saul pursued and tried to destroy him. In those years he learned to cherish God’s personal words and promises. He loved God’s judgements – the way God personally judged and chastised him – for he realised God was acting like a father and truly cared for him. As David learned God’s precepts, principles and ways of dealing with him, he saw God’s character – God Himself – and it was God whom he loved, delighted in, and longed for. He was hungry and thirsty for this God with whom he had a living personal relationship.
